Dr. Veronica Abdur-Rahman has extensive experience in the areas of student retention and progression. Early in her career as a nurse educator, Dr. Abdur-Rahman used pre-admission assessment tools to identify students at-risk for academic failure and developed and implemented courses and seminars to facilitate student success in nursing school. Dr. Abdur-Rahman has published her work on retention in several nursing journals and the article, "The Relationship Between Nurse Entrance Test (NET) Scores and Performance of First-Year Nursing Students," was published in 1999 in a book on Recruitment and Retention of Minority Nursing Students by Tucker Publications.
In 1995, Dr. Abdur-Rahman was awarded a grant from the Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) to improve pre-nursing students' performance in math, reading, and critical thinking. Project outcomes included the development of enhancement strategies to improve basic skills in addition to skills with test-taking, stress and time management. Pre-nursing students who participated in the project performed significantly better than non-participants on standardized admission exams and experienced lower attrition in the nursing program. The project, entitled, "Retaining Ethnic Minority Nursing Students (REMS): A Multidimensional Approach was published in the ABNF Journal, March/April 1999.
In her current role as Director of the BSN Program at Spalding University, Dr. Abdur-Rahman has designed and implemented an extended degree program specifically for students experiencing academic difficulties. Additionally, she has fine-tuned the delivery format of nursing courses in order to facilitate student learning. These initiatives have resulted in a significant improvement in the retention rate of nursing students. |
