During its regular meeting on Thursday, January 17, the Board of Trustees approved the initiation a project and appointed Eley/Allred/Sasaki as the design professionals for master planning of the new Gulf Coast Cross Creek Campus. The Board also formally accepted the donation of 200 acres of land by Gulf South Technology Center, LLC, as documented by George Schloegel/W.C. Fore in a letter that can be viewed here. The Office of Gulf Coast Operations is responsible for assessing and meeting the changing educational needs of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. When Hurricane Katrina devastated the coast in late August 2005, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning reaffirmed their standing commitment to higher education in south Mississippi. The Office of Gulf Coast Operations is the result of that commitment.

As approved by the Board, the office will oversee the rehabilitation of the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach, which was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

The office will also oversee the establishment of an additional coast campus to be led by Southern Miss.
