Policy Research and Planning includes six units: Economics Department, Long Range Economic Development Planning, Delta Revitalization Task Force, The IHL Management Information System (MIS), The Office of Technology and The Mississippi Automated Resource Information System (MARIS).
 
The Bureau of Long Range Economic Development Planning supports the Special Task Force for Economic Development Planning. The Bureau is responsible for preparing, maintaining and updating a long range plan for the economic development of the state. Created in 1987, Bureau staff serves as liaison for the Special Task Force to the Governor and the Legislature.

The Economics Department provides economic and demographic information on special topics of interest to Mississippians, including economic trends, population forecasts, and econometric forecasts for the state of Mississippi.

Delta Revitalization Task Force staff supports the special task force for revitalization of the Mississippi Delta Region. Created in 2006, the special task force is charged with setting measurable, achievable and significant goals to the Mississippi Delta region.

The IHL Management Information System coordinates the collection, compilation, analysis, and distribution of university and system data. This information is used in day-to-day activities, as well as supporting the system planning process.

The Office of Technology supports the information technology infrastructure within the IHL office and provides information to the IHL Board of Trustees and the universities on technology issues.

The Mississippi Automated Resource Information System (MARIS) provides access to Mississippi's statewide geographic information system.

 
Publications
Mississippi Population Projections 2010, 2015, and 2020. Population projections by county, sex and race.

Mississippi Economic Review and Outlook presents the state and national economic forecasts. It includes articles analyzing issues related to the state economy. Detailed forecast and historical tables track trends in major economic indicators and present projections for the coming five years. Published twice yearly.

The Economic Status of African-Americans in Mississippi (February 2008) provides a snapshot of the economic status of African-Americans in Mississippi, noting remaining challenges and promising trends.

Solving the Poverty Problem in Mississippi (June 2008) presents an overview of the challenges facing the state if it wishes to reduce the high incidence of poverty here.
