EDUCATION AND RESEARCH CENTER TO HOLD HEALTH FAIR FOR STATE EMPLOYEES, FAMILIES

Encouraging staff members and their families to act healthy and be healthy, the agencies and organizations housed in the Education and Research Center of Mississippi in Jackson have banded together to provide a comprehensive health fair for all state employees and their families. The health fair will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and is free to all state employees and their family members.

The organizations involved in planning the event include Mississippi Public Broadcasting, Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning, Mississippi Library Commission, Mississippi Community College Board, and Motivating Mississippi – Keys to Healthy Living powered by Web MD Health Services.

Employees who pre-register may receive screenings for cholesterol, glucose and bone density. Alcorn State University’s School of Nursing’s faculty and staff will bring their Mobile Health Van on site to assist with the screenings. Other screenings available to everyone without an appointment include blood pressure, body mass index, hearing, vision and oral health. The Hinds Community College School of Nursing will be provide the blood pressure screenings.

Attendees will also learn about a number of health issues, including arthritis, ergonomics, gastrointestinal issues, heart health, mental health, nutrition, organ donation and smoking cessation. Area fitness clubs will provide information for those who want to become more active in 2013.

The screenings and programs will be held in the Mississippi Public Broadcasting Auditorium and Lobby, the Jackson State University Universities Center and the Institutions of Higher Education Lobby.

In addition, Mississippi Blood Services will have a bus on-site for a blood drive during the Health Fair. The Education and Research Center of Mississippi is located at 3825 Ridgewood Road in Jackson.
