All businesses, large and small, across all sectors, need staff members to process payroll, administer benefits, ensure that all laws, regulations and policies impacting employees are followed. Human resources professionals manage all these responsibilities, while also helping sustain employee morale and build employee recognition programs. Mississippi Public Universities prepare students to work in the human resources field.

Mississippi State University's Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in Business Administration gives students the flexibility to gain general knowledge of various aspects of the business world, including human resources. This major teaches students the universal functions of business, such as planning, organizing, staffing, directing, controlling, and budgeting—as well as how to organize these resources efficiently.

After learning each of these disciplines, students then select across three areas for additional specialization, choosing from courses that include accounting, business law, economics, finance, information systems, international business, management, marketing, real estate, and risk management and insurance. For a career in human resources, this degree prepares students for a variety of jobs, from employment specialist to human resources director.

The University of Mississippi offers a Bachelor of Business Administration program with an emphasis in human resources management. Through the classes offered for this program, students learn how to manage and maximize the potential of the people who work in organizations. By knowing HR practices as a business function, graduates understand how people act in a professional environment, adapt to the organization's changing needs and advance their careers.

For those interested in human resources management, The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in management, which prepares students for leadership success in many career fields in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. Students in the management program develop managerial skills in goal selection and planning, assigning tasks, delegating authority, allocating resources, motivating employees and monitoring outcomes. Students also can enhance their knowledge of the field by traveling abroad to participate in the University's British Studies, Asian Studies and Italian Studies programs.

The Alcorn State University Master of Business Administration (MBA) program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and provides students with transferrable skills that will add value and opportunity to their careers in organizational management. Students pursue advanced study via global business focused courses which broadens their knowledge in accounting, finance, marketing, human resources and management.
