Even though they don't impact your GPA or class standing, extracurricular activities also help you get ready for college. Participate in a variety of "extras" - you'll be more well-rounded, and you'll always have something to do.
Clubs or Organizations
The options are endless. These organizations range from academic clubs (National Honor Society, Beta) to politcal clubs (Young Republicans, Young Democrats) to special interest clubs (Thespians, Debate, Student Government).
Whenever possible, don't just participate. Try to find a leadership role, or a role that allows you to use your talents. Not everyone can be the SGA President. But every SGA President needs help from members.
Sports
Not much we need to say here. High school sports are a big deal in Mississippi. And that's not a bad thing.
But, if you've got professional sports in your future plans, you should know the facts. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones. Just in case it doesn't work, you should probably have a Plan B that includes college and a career.

To become a college athlete, you'll have to meet certain eligibility standards. Check out the NCAA Eligibility and Recruiting Guidelines.
Community Service
Community service is not only a wonderful way to give back to the community, but it gives you a way to explore different types of work environments. If you volunteer at a Boys and Girls Club during the summer and love it, you may want to consider a career that allows you to work with kids (like teaching).
Jobs
We know the real reason you work is to have money. But part-time jobs are good for another reason. They let you try out different kinds of work and work environments to see what you like and what you don't.
