Gulf Coast Research Lab Minority Summer Grant for Undergraduates (GCLR-UG)

Program Overview
The primary objectives of this program are to provide education opportunities to students who are majoring in marine and environmental sciences. The objectives are to provide summer grants for minority students to attend classes or conduct independent study at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory Summer Academic Institute. (Students must apply to the Academic Institute separately. Applications are available from the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory Summer Academic Institute.  Call (228) 872-4200.)

Application dates: January 1 – March 31

Eligibility
You are eligible if all the following apply:

  • You are a current legal resident of Mississippi 
  • You are an undergraduate student attending a Mississippi college or university
  • You are majoring in marine and environmental sciences 
  • Has been admitted as a full-time student at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory Summer Academic Institute (Applications are available from the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory Summer Academic Institute, by calling (228) 872-4200.)
  • You are classified as a minority student by the registrar’s office at the attending institution
  • Non-residents are not eligible to apply.

Award Amount and Length of Eligibility 
Awards may be for tuition and a stipend during the approved session. Participants may choose to attend a four week, five week or ten week program, but may only participate one summer, one session.

Awarding Priorities
The Mississippi Office of Student Financial Aid will make awards on a first-come first-served based upon our level of funding.

To Apply

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. Submit the following supporting documents:
  • Signed copy of the first two pages of parent’s State Tax Return for the current tax filing year. Independent students would provide signed copy of student’s State Tax Return.  Am I dependent or Independent? 
  • Copy of current valid parent(s) Mississippi driver license, unless you elected to submit it electronically during the online application
  • Complete the application for admittance as a full-time student at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory Summer Academic Institute

  1. WHY DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE THE ONLINE FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION AND THE GULF COAST RESEARCH LABORATORY SUMMER ACADEMIC INSTITUTE APPLICATION?
    The online financial aid application is to verify Mississippi residency and for other financial aid awarding purposes. The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory application is for admittance to the program.
  2. IS GCRL AVAILABLE TO ME DURING THE REGULAR ACADEMIC YEAR?
    No. GCRL is available during the summer semester only.
  3. MAY I PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM MORE THAT ONE SUMMER
    No. you may only participate for one summer.
